Description

An unfilled grappling dummy for drilling at home: a heavy canvas shell with arms and legs sewn in a kneeling-ready posture, double stitched at every joint, shipped flat so you fill it yourself with old clothes, towels, foam or fabric scraps. Once stuffed it holds a shape you can mount, pass, armbar and throw, and it takes the repetitions your training partners are not always available for.

Why grapplers choose it

Filled dummies cost three times as much to ship and still arrive with a filling you cannot adjust. An unfilled dummy lets you choose the weight, from a light 30 lb dummy for submission flow to a 70 lb dummy packed tight for throws and takedowns, and you can repack it as you get stronger. The shell is a thick polyester canvas with reinforced seams at the shoulders, hips and neck, the places a dummy tears first, and a wide zipper along the back for filling. The arms are long enough for armbars, kimuras and guard passing drills, and the legs bend at the hip for leg entanglement positions. It suits BJJ, MMA ground and pound, judo throws and wrestling snap-downs.

  • Heavy canvas shell, double stitched at every joint
  • Fill to the weight you want with clothes, towels or foam
  • Arms and legs sewn for armbars, passes and throws
  • Wide back zipper for filling and repacking
  • Red, blue, tan or black

Fit and sizing

The dummy stands about 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm) tall once filled, which is an adult-sized partner for most drills. Weight depends on what you pack in: tightly rolled old clothes give about 40 to 50 lb, foam scraps 25 to 35 lb, and a layer of sand sealed in bags at the core adds weight for throws if you want it. Fill the legs and arms first and pack them firm, then the torso, and finish with the head so the neck stays rigid. A loosely filled dummy flops and is hard to drill with; pack it tighter than seems necessary.

Care

Wipe the canvas with a damp cloth and let it dry fully before putting it back on the mats. If the filling gets damp, open the zipper and air the dummy out. Keep it off wet or rough surfaces that abrade the seams, and store it upright or lying flat, not folded.

FAQ
Are grappling dummies worth it?

For solo repetition of movements you already know, yes: guard passes, armbars, back takes, throws and ground and pound. They do not react or resist, so they will not replace a partner, but for drilling at home between classes they give you hundreds of extra reps a week.

What do you fill a grappling dummy with?

Old clothes and towels are the classic filling and give a realistic weight; foam scraps or polyfill make a lighter dummy for flow drilling; sealed bags of sand at the core add weight for throws. Pack the limbs first and tight, then the torso and head.

How much does a filled grappling dummy weigh?

That depends on the filling. Tightly packed clothes give roughly 40 to 50 lb at this size, foam 25 to 35 lb, and adding sand bags at the core can push it to 70 lb or more. Most people start around 40 lb and add weight later.

Can I use a grappling dummy for takedowns and throws?

Yes, once it is packed firm. The reinforced seams at the shoulders and hips are there for lifting and throwing, and a dense core makes it feel more like a body. Throw it on mats, not on a hard floor, to protect both the dummy and your joints.

Is it good for MMA ground and pound?

A firmly packed dummy is a standard tool for ground and pound and for practicing positional control from mount. Wear gloves to protect your hands against the canvas, and pack the torso tightly so the dummy does not fold under pressure.
