Description

No gi shorts in the Jiu Jitsu Black design: a giant white 柔術 kanji with red Jiujitsu lettering on distressed black. The print is sublimated into a light shell that dries fast between sessions.

These no gi shorts are built for one job: rolling. No pockets, no zippers, no metal, a hook-and-loop fly with a drawstring that stays tied through scrambles, and a sublimated print on a lightweight polyester shell that dries before you get home. The cut is a mid-thigh grappling length with a split side seam so you can bring a knee to your chest in open guard without the hem fighting you.

Why grapplers choose it

Regular gym shorts fail on the mat in predictable ways: pockets catch toes, zippers scratch partners and mesh liners tear. Grappling shorts fix all three. The shell is a four-way stretch polyester, about 150 GSM, that weighs almost nothing when soaked, and the waistband is wide and flat so it does not roll or dig in when you sit in guard. The print is sublimated, so the design survives hundreds of washes, and the dark base color hides mat dust. Wear them alone or over spats; the inner waistband is soft enough to go without a liner.

  • No pockets, no zippers, no exposed metal
  • Split side seam for full hip mobility
  • Hook-and-loop fly with internal drawstring
  • Lightweight sublimated shell, dries fast

Fit and sizing

Sizes M to XXL. The supplier chart is in Asian sizing and runs about one size smaller than US fight-shorts brands: a 32 inch waist usually lands in L, a 34 in XL. Because the waist has both a hook-and-loop closure and a drawstring, there is some adjustment, so if you are between sizes order up and cinch the drawstring. The inseam is around 7 inches in L, which sits mid-thigh on most men. If you prefer a shorter, higher-slit competition cut, stay with your regular size.

Care

Close the hook-and-loop fly before washing so it does not snag the shell or your rash guards. Machine wash cold, hang dry, no softener and no iron. The shorts will be dry in an hour or two on a hanger.

FAQ
How should no gi shorts fit?

Snug at the waist so they cannot be pulled down in a scramble, with enough room in the thigh to bring a knee to your chest. The hem should sit mid-thigh, above the knee, so it does not catch on your partner or your own foot. The drawstring should be tied every time, not just the hook-and-loop.

Can no gi shorts have pockets?

They should not. Pockets catch fingers and toes during rolling, which is how a lot of jammed digits happen, and most gyms and competitions ban them along with zippers and metal eyelets. These shorts have none of those, which is the main difference between grappling shorts and ordinary athletic shorts.

Do I wear spats or compression shorts under them?

Either works. Most grapplers wear spats or compression shorts underneath for coverage and hygiene, since these shorts have no built-in liner. The waistband is soft enough to wear alone if you prefer, especially in hot gyms. Spats under shorts is the most common no-gi setup at US gyms.

Are these shorts good for MMA too?

Yes. The split side seam, closed fly and absence of pockets are exactly what MMA training requires, and the cut is the same mid-thigh length used by most fight-shorts brands. They are a little lighter than dedicated MMA shorts, which many people prefer for grappling-heavy classes.

What size should I order?

Order one size up from your US waist size, then cinch the drawstring. A 32 inch waist is usually an L, a 34 an XL, a 36 an XXL. The hook-and-loop and drawstring give about two inches of adjustment, so sizing up is safer than sizing down.
