Description
BJJ spats in the Dragon Scale design: grey dragon scales running down both legs with a dragon on the thigh. The print is sublimated, so it stays sharp at the knees where spats stretch the most.
BJJ spats are full-length compression tights built for grappling: they cover your legs against mat burn, keep sweat off your partners and give you nothing to grab. These sublimated spats use a polyester-spandex knit with a wide, flat waistband that stays up under shorts, a gusseted crotch for open guard, and flatlock seams so there is no rubbing on the inside of the knee after a long class.
Why grapplers choose it
Most grapplers who try spats once never go back to bare legs. Skin stays protected during shots, knee cuts and leg entanglements, which cuts down on mat burn, ringworm and the general friction of no-gi. The knit is thin and dries fast, so the tights do not add heat; they just remove skin contact. The sublimated print is dyed through the fabric, which keeps the pattern crisp on the knees, the part of a legging that takes the most abuse. Worn under grappling shorts they are the standard no-gi kit at most US gyms; worn alone they are allowed in many open-mat and training settings.
- Full-length coverage against mat burn and skin contact
- Gusseted crotch and four-way stretch for open guard
- Flat waistband that stays put under shorts
- Sublimated print, sharp on the knees after months of use
Fit and sizing
Sizes M to XXL. The supplier chart runs small, as with most Asian-made compression gear: choose one size up from your US pant size for a normal compression fit, two sizes up if you have large thighs from wrestling or squatting. The inseam is cut for average height; men over 6 feet 2 inches should expect the hem to sit just above the ankle. A good fit is snug through the thigh and calf with no sagging at the knee and a waistband that does not roll when you sit in guard.
Care
Machine wash cold inside out after every session, no fabric softener, hang dry. Do not put them in the dryer; heat shortens the life of the spandex and loosens the waistband. Rotate two pairs if you train most days.

FAQ
What are spats in BJJ?
Spats are full-length compression tights worn for no-gi grappling, usually under shorts. They protect the skin from mat burn and friction, keep sweat contained and give your opponent nothing to grip. The name comes from the old-fashioned shoe covers, but in jiu jitsu it simply means grappling leggings.
Do you wear shorts over spats?
Most grapplers in the US wear shorts over spats in class, and many gyms ask for it out of modesty. Spats alone are fine at many open mats and for competition in divisions that allow them. If you are new to a gym, wear shorts over them for the first visit and follow what the regulars do.
How should BJJ spats fit?
Snug from waist to ankle with no bagging at the knee or sagging at the crotch, and a waistband that stays flat when you sit up from guard. They should not cut into the waist or restrict a deep squat. If the knee area goes loose after a few washes, the pair was a size too large.
Do spats prevent mat burn?
They remove the skin-to-mat friction that causes mat burn on the knees, shins and the tops of the feet, so yes, they reduce it a great deal. They also reduce skin-to-skin contact, which is one of the ways skin infections spread in grappling gyms. Wash them after every class.
Can I wear these spats under a gi?
Yes. Thin spats under gi pants are common in winter and for people who find raw cotton gi pants uncomfortable. They do not add noticeable bulk. Check competition rules before wearing them under a gi at an event, as some do not allow it.
