Fit and sizing
Match the belt size to your gi size. A0 is about 240 cm (94 inches) long, A1 about 260 cm (102 inches), A2 about 280 cm (110 inches), A3 about 300 cm (118 inches) and A4 about 320 cm (126 inches). A correctly sized belt wraps twice around the waist and leaves tails of 8 to 12 inches on each side after the knot. If your waist is large for your height, go up one size; if you prefer short tails, go down. Measure your current belt from end to end if you are unsure.
Care
Tradition aside, a belt that goes on the mat three times a week should be washed. Wash cold on its own the first time, since the dye can bleed, then with the gi afterward. Hang dry; a dryer shrinks cotton belts a few centimeters and makes them curl. Roll it rather than folding it to keep the core flat.

What size BJJ belt should I get?
The same A size as your gi in most cases: A0 is about 240 cm, A1 260 cm, A2 280 cm, A3 300 cm, A4 320 cm. The belt should wrap twice around the waist and leave 8 to 12 inches of tail on each side after the knot. Go up a size if you carry a lot of weight at the waist.
What are the BJJ belt colors in order?
For adults: white, blue, purple, brown and black, with up to four stripes at each rank before black. Black belt degrees follow. Kids use a separate scale with grey, yellow, orange and green belts before they reach blue as adults. All five adult ranks are sold here.
Can I buy a belt of a higher rank than mine?
You can, but you should not wear it. Rank in jiu jitsu is awarded by your instructor, and showing up in a belt you have not earned is taken seriously at every gym. Most people buy their current rank as a backup or buy the next rank as a gift for a teammate who was just promoted.
Is this a competition-legal belt?
It is a standard cotton rank belt with a sleeve bar, in the regulation 4 cm width and the correct rank colors, which is what most tournaments ask for. If your event requires a belt from an approved brand list, check the rules before you compete.
How do you wash a BJJ belt?
Cold water, on its own the first time because the dye can run, then with the gi. Hang dry and roll it for storage. A dryer shrinks the cotton and curls the belt. Washing it regularly keeps it from carrying mat bacteria, whatever the superstition says.
